22g, a few months later. a review.

i am writing this review in english because i promised it over on baladeos facebookpage.

i bought the baladeo 22g a few months ago, mainly because its beautiful looks and its size/weight. i carried it as my main edc blade for a few weeks. other than that i took it out swimming (it’s perfect for that)

so. i love the looks. it’s a gorgeous, little blade, but, and there’s a big but, the design has a few flaws i ran into.

first, the stop-pin. in the design of the knife this part is critical, because it retains the knife when closed AND when open. big problem is, it’s not lock-tighted, and it got loose on me / fell out. once your stop-pin is out, the knife can rotate around freely and WILL cut or stab you.

second, the washers. the blade has two washers to keep it smooth. one of them broke on me, just from opening and closing the knife. after this washer is broken, the blade is sticking out from the handle. you can easily rip/cut clothes – or your hands – now, because the tip of the blade sticks out a few mm from the handle. this is a basic design flaw, that was quite obvious when i looked at it. the plastic washer gets pinched every time you open the knife, so it will break eventually – and WILL cut or stab you.

edit: third, small knifes are awesome, when you know where they are. will add some pics later in the day.

i think the hardest “cutting” i did with this tool was slicing pizza for some friends, maybe some fishing work, usual hiking/outdoor stuff like cutting paracord or some bread.

fixes: well i tried to fix the bugs. stop pin was easy, use a lot of lock tight and be done with it. the washer problem stays, it’s an inert design flaw, hard to adress – i guess that’s why it’s there.

fazit: it’s a beautiful knife, and i am happy to have it. i just think it’s more hype than anything. if you want to use one, just take care of it, and be aware of the problems.

dieser stein…

der königsfelsen nahe waidhofen an der thaya steht als wirklich schöner boulder- und kletterspot schon lange auf meiner liste. er ist oben wirklich schön überhängend, bietet aber trotzdem (fast) überall brauchbare griffe und tritte. all in all ein tolles projekt.

also war ich am samstag dort, hab meine sicherungspunkte eingerichtet, und mein seil aufgehängt. selbstsichern ist zwar recht einschränkend, aber ich habe wirklich erwartet dass der felsen auch so geht.

stellt sich heraus dass irgendwo im oberen drittel kaum mehr griffe sind. ist zwar machbar, aber nur dynamisch denke ich, und das risiko nehme ich alleine nicht in kauf. stellt sich nur die frage wann ich wieder zu dem stein komme, diesesmal mit sicherungspartner, und endlich erfolgreich.

ich sollte wirklich endlich aufhören diesen berg stundenlange an zu starren.

dropleg

ich hab auch an einem dropleg-sheath for mein esee-6 gearbeitet. für den winter sind dropleg rigs einfach sinnvoller.

diy-dropleg-knife-messer-rig ich hab im internet nichts sinnvolles dazu gefunden, also werd ich das einmal zusammen schreiben. deutsch, und englisch.

das ganze basiert auf einem sicherheitsgurt, den ich aus einem auto geschnitten habe. den habe ich einmal umgelegt, und an verschiedenen stellen abgenäht.
it’s based on a seat-belt i cut from an old car. i doubled it up, and stitched it in some places.

auf dem foto kann man 3 tunnel sehen, die jeweils auf höhe der löcher in der scheide abgenäht sind. dort passt genau ein stück schnur durch, um die verlängerung stabil mit der scheide verbinden zu können.
you can see that i stitched the fabric to build 3 tunnels to tie the sheath to my extender with 550 paracord.

auf der frontseite sieht man dass ich die verlängerung an der messerscheide festgebunden habe. ausserdem habe ich den messergriff mit einem kurzen stück elastischer schnur zum sicherheitsburt gebunden.
on the front you can see that the extender is tied to the sheath of my knife, also you can see that i added some bungee-cord to fix the knifehandle to my strap.
auf der unterseite ist noch ca. 1m schnur, um das ganze noch an meinem bein zu fixieren, wenn ich laufe oder klettere.

um das ganze so flexibel wie möglich zu halten, habe ich die gürtelschlaufe nicht abgenäht. so kann ich 1. alle möglichen gürtel verwenden, und 2. das ding abnehmen ohne den gürtel zu öffnen. ich hoffe au den bildern sieht man wie ich es fixiert habe, zuerst durch die gürtelschlaufe am sicherheitsgurt, dann hinter dem gürtel vorbei, nach forne führen, über den gurt und wieder hinter dem gürtel vorbei. festziehen, abbinden, hält perfekt und rutscht nicht.
to make my system as flexible as possible i tie my dropleg to me belt. so i can quick-release it if needed. it’s rather easy but very sturdy, i guess you can see from the pics how it’s done.
